FAQs
DSSTest for Windows
1. I have the full Adobe Acrobat product installed on my computer, and I am
having problems starting DSSTest because of Acrobat Reader. What should I
do?
This may be a Acrobat version-dependent issue. The workaround, however,
is simple! BEFORE you start DSSTest, start up the full Acrobat product and
minimize it (no need to open any files). Now start DSSTest... it should
have no problems coming up.
DSSTest for Pocket PC
1. I installed the exam database I purchased on my device, but when I select the Exam | Open dialog it
doesn't show up-- I only see the Light Gun database. What should I
do?
This happens when you install the database to a custom location (such as a
storage card) that is different than the directory you installed the DSSTEST
program.
Place your Pocket PC in the cradle, open ActiveSync and click
the "Explore" button. Look around for a file named DSS?P.CDB where the
? is I, C or P (i.e
DSSIP.CDB, DSSPP.CDB, DSSCP.CDB) on your device and/or memory card using
Explorer. Move the file to the same directory that DSSTest is installed in (the
directory which has the DSSTEST.VB file in it.) You should see a few other CDB
files there too, such as DSSLG.CDB (the light gun database) and DSSUSER.CDB.
Restart the DSSTest software and choose Exam | Open… you
should now see your database listed.
2. I installed the program on my Pocket PC 2003 (CE 4.2) device, but when I
start the program I get an immediate error message about not being able to open
the History table. What should I
do?
Contact us for an updated version of the database that works on your Pocket
PC 2003 device.
DSSLog for Windows
1. I get an "Error in Formula" error message when I run a
report, and the report never displays.
This is caused by having a single quote character in either a user-defined
column name OR the name of the report itself (for example, "Joe's
Multiengine Time"). Remove the offending single quote and the problem goes
away.
2. I get an "The report width is greater than the
paper width" error message when I run a
report, and the report never displays.
This problem was fixed in version 1.38. You should upgrade to the
latest version of the product on the downloads
page.
3. I want to import my logbook data into DSSLog. How can I do
this?

into DSSLog for Windows
DSSLog for PalmOS
1. I want to use DSSLog for PalmOS without using DSSLog for
Windows. How do I do this?
There are two scenarios you may want to use; the solution depends on which
option you want to do:
1. If you want to keep all of you logbook data on your Palm device, without
HotSyncing it to another application on your desktop computer, then when you
install the software choose the "Custom" option and select ONLY the
software for the Palm device. Do NOT select the HotSync Conduit software.
Without the conduit installed, the HotSync action will simply be a database
backup, and all of your logbook data will remain on your device. This
option will also work with Macintosh computers.
2. If you want to HotSync your log entries to some other application than
DSSLog for Windows (such as a spreadsheet), install both the Palm software AND
the conduit using the standard install. Before you HotSync your device,
you must tell the conduit where to put the import files created by the
conduit. To do this, use Notepad to create a text file named
"DSSAV8N.INI" in your Windows directory (C:\Windows, typically). The
contents of the file should be as follows:
[DSSLOG]
; change the next line to the subdirectory you want to use
LOCATION=C:\DSSLOG
Now, when you HotSync your device, CSV files ("comma separated
value" text files) will be created with each HotSync, and the filename of
each CSV file will include the pilot name and a date/timestamp when the HotSync
occurred. These files can be directly opened with spreadsheet
applications, or imported using many database applications!
DSSCalc for Windows
1. While Installing I get an error message about file DDEML.DLL in use.
This message indicates you own an older version of DSSCalc,
as the new installation program doesn't give this message (perhaps you got older
shelf stock from your FBO). No problem, just call us with your serial
number and we'll email you the latest version!
2. Can I use Imperial Gallons (or some other measure of volume) instead of
US gallons in the calculations?
Yes! As long as you always use the SAME unit of measure for gallon on every
screen, DSSCalc really doesn't care what units of measure you use for
fuel. HOWEVER, you must change the "Fuel Lbs/Gal" conversion
factor on the "Conversion | Volume/Weight" screen if you want the
calculations involving fuel weight to also be correct. The default value
is "6.0" for the standard 6 pounds per gallon of AvGas; change this to
"7.2" pounds per imperial gallon. PLEASE NOTE, the calculations shown
for "Liters" and "Liters/Hour" will NO LONGER be correct,
however the "Fuel Flow (Lbs/Hour)", "Fuel (pounds)",
"Fuel Flow (kg/hr)", and "Fuel (kilograms)" will still be
valid.
3. Can I have a different kind of fuel than AvGas (Jet-A, Autogas, etc.)?
Yes! All you need to do is change the "Fuel Lbs/Gal" conversion
factor on the "Conversion | Volume/Weight" screen to the proper weight
of your fuel per gallon. The default value is "6.0" for the
standard 6 pounds per gallon of AvGas, but you can modify it to the correct
value for your fuel of choice.

Miscellaneous
1. What is the password to the downloaded update I got from your web site?
Call or email us to get the
password. Be sure to include your serial number and the update you are
tyring to install.
2. I own the Palm OS (or other version) of DSSxxxx, and I just changed to a
Pocket PC (or other device with a completely different OS). Can I update
my program to the other version?
Sorry, no. For each platform, Palm/Windows/Pocket PC, the compilers and
source code are completely different. They are in effect different
programs entirely, and each platform requires a separate license to use the
software.
